In an effort to repopulate the regional Italian
city of Molise and prevent it from dying out, the Molise regional government of
Italy is offering €700 euros ($770) per month for three years to
anyone willing to relocate to the city. By our calculation that’s a total of
around €25,200 euro / ($27,720 USD).
To get the cash, you must move to a town with less than
2,000 people. And, you must agree to open a business. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time
that living in Italy has been more than affordable and easy.
Last year, precisely in February 2018, the
authority of the mountainous and Mediterranean island of Sardinia, another
regional Italian city made world headline news when the Mayor of the region sold
hundreds of homes to interested people from all over the world for just €1 euro.
And although they were not the first Italian town to undertake in this sort of real estate bonanza, but it became the first to live up to the promise.

REASON FOR PAYING YOU TO MIGRATE TO MOLISE:
Molise, a mostly mountainous region of southern
Italy, has been having issues with keeping residents around. According to the
Italian National Institute of Statistics, more than 9,000 people have left
since 2014. Not one baby was born in any of its towns in 2018 hence this region
of Italy will pay you to live there.
Molise, a
region that covers over 1,700 square miles, has a little over 300,000
citizens and the numbers are decreasing.
According to Donato Toma, the president of Molise, in
a recent interview with The Guardian, He
clarified that “If they had offered funding, it would have been yet another
charity gesture,” “We wanted to do more; we wanted people to invest here. They
can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant,
anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the
population.”

"We need to
safeguard our roots," Antonio Tedeschi, the regional councilor who came
up with the idea to fund newcomers, told CNN Travel.
Tedeschi adds that he wants the region he grew up in to "undergo a
renaissance and avoid its authentic villages turning into ghost towns."
The Molise’s coast along the Adriatic Sea “boasts
sandy beaches surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation.” It’s loaded with
archaeological sites, abbeys, small towns and countless castles.
In addition to residents getting paid, the towns
will also get some help.
Toma said each town with under 2,000 residents will
get 10,000 euros ($11,050) to build infrastructure and push cultural
activities.
“It’s not just a matter of increasing the
population. People also need infrastructure and a reason to stay, otherwise
we’ll end up back where we started in a few years,” he told The Guardian.
The
Italian region is specifically looking to entice young people or
couples with small children, in hopes of reversing the population
decline, but they're open to anyone wanting a change of scenery who may
find it in Molise. To qualify for the $27,720, applicants must choose to
live in a town with fewer than 2,000 citizens, must vow to open some
sort of business and to apply through .
Whatever your fantasies of being a business-owner and your own boss may be, the application for the $27,720 grant that opened September 16.
