Merit-Based Scholarships at Vienna University of Economics and Business in Austria
Merit-based scholarship grants are intended to reward students for outstanding academic achievement in a regular degree program.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing bachelor, master and PhD programme.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded to study the subjects offered by the university.
Scholarship Award: Merit-based scholarship grants may not be below € 750 or exceed € 1,500.
Scholarship can be taken in Austria
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- EEA member country citizenship or Austrian citizen status (§ 4 of the Student Support Act): Citizens of third countries are considered to have equal status if included under the EEA Agreement or the Treaty of Rome; also stateless persons, if before commencing their studies at WU, they, together with at least one parent, have been subject without restriction to Austrian income tax for at least five continuous years, and their center of vital interests was in Austria throughout this period; and refugees as defined in Article 1 of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt, BGBl) No. 55/1955.
- Enrollment in a regular degree program at WU
- Compliance with the entitlement period (§ 18 of the Student Support Act), accounting for any extensions due to reasonable cause (§ 19 of the Student Support Act). If a student has changed to a new curriculum version of his or her degree program, the duration of studies under the old curriculum will be taken into account accordingly.
- Outstanding academic performance in a regular WU degree program in the academic year 2016/17 (October 1, 2016 – September 30, 2017). Merit scholarship grants are based only on grades with an examination date within the period named above which appear on the transcript provided by WU Vienna University of Economics and Business on or before October 31, 2017.

- A grade point average of 1.5 in the academic year 2016/17
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 52 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.7 in the academic year 2016/17
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 52 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 19 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- Research Seminars I-IV in the main subject and the Research Proposal are not included in the calculation of minimum academic performance and grade point average.
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 18 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 22 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- The courses Finance Paper Reading A and B, Paper Writing, and the Research Seminars A and B are not included in the calculation of minimum academic performance and grade point average.
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 29 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- PhD Program in Economics and Social Sciences
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 28 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17
- A grade point average of 1.0 in the academic year 2016/17
- Electives and the Research Proposal are not included in the calculation of minimum academic performance and grade point average.
- Individual study programs with WU focus
- Minimum academic performance requirements: completion of program-relevant courses worth at least 52 ECTS credits in the academic year 2016/17. For applications for an individual study program, transcripts for all exams taken for the individual study program and any official credit transfer notifications (for recognised exams) must be submitted within the application period.
- A grade point average of 1.5 in the academic year 2016/17
English Language Requirement: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.
Method of Application:
Applications can be submitted using the online application tool. If you are not an Austrian citizen, please submit your supporting documents with regard to equal status (§ 4 of the Student Support Act) to the Study Regulations office during the application period. If you have reasonable grounds for an extension of the entitlement period pursuant to § 19 of the Student Support Act, these documents must also be submitted to the Study Regulations office during the application period.
