50 Best Restaurants in the World

The 2017 edition of the World's 50 Best Restaurants has a date and a new destination.

After making its debut in New York last year, organizers have revealed that the 15th annual event will be held in Melbourne, Australia, on April 5.

The move to the Southern Hemisphere is part of the group's larger rebranding and expansion efforts. After being held for 14 years in London, the gala event moved to New York for the first time this year in an effort to generate buzz and gain relevance among gastronomes in North America.
While normally held in early summer, the event is being timed to coincide with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, which stretches between March 31 and April 9.

Likewise, along with the gala event, organizers have announced that a separate weeklong food and wine event will take place concurrently under the World's 50 Best Restaurants banner.

The decision to move to Australia is a highly strategic and commercial one. In addition to hitting a fairly isolated corner of the world and broadening their international scope, the event is a tie-in with Tourism Australia, which has been aggressively promoting the country's culinary offerings as part of its tourism campaign since 2013.

Earlier this year, the tourism office partnered with superstar Danish chef René Redzepi in opening a pop-up restaurant in Sydney that showcased local, Australian ingredients.

“After 14 years hosting the awards event in London, we decided to take The World's 50 Best Restaurants on a global tour, kicking off in New York in June 2016,” said group editor William Drew in a statement.

“Now we could not be more thrilled to be moving to Melbourne, one of the great food cities of the world, in 2017. Come April next year, Australia will undoubtedly be the place to be for those passionate about great food and inspired restaurants.

Perhaps one of the most high-profile culinary events to legitimize Melbourne as a gastronomic hotspot was the arrival of British chef Heston Blumenthal who recreated his flagship Bray restaurant The Fat Duck at the Crown Melbourne hotel for six months last year.
